Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a World Heritage Site. For more than 5,000 years the Plains Indian hunters drove herds of stampeding bison over sandstone cliffs. At the cliff base, the bison were butchered for their meat and skins. According to Blackfoot oral traditions, an Indian brave stood under the shelter of a ledge to witness the plunge of countless buffalo, but was crushed by the falling bison, thus its name.
