Horiany, Ukraine - May 2010

The Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. Ann where my ancestors worshiped in the early 1900's. The Rotunda is one of the most ancient architectural antiquities of Ukraine, dating to the end of the 10th century or beginning of the 11th. The original church consisted of only the Rotunda and was a family chapel for the Druheta family who lived in the castle, known as St. Nicholas Rotunda Chapel. In typical Romanesque style, the Rotunda is a hexagonal centric structure, covered with a helmet-like dome. In the 14th century, a late Gothic horizontal nave was attached to the Rotunda. The rotunda itself became the altar portion of the new church.
